How to Play Craps

The rules of craps can be confusing. There are many wagers available and many actions occur during the course of a round of wagering. But the rules are actually very simple and once you get the hang of it, they are easy to follow.

The simplest explanation is that craps is a dice game where a person rolls two die numbered 1-6 and the outcome of the roll determines the result of the wager. Some bets are determined immediately, others might require another roll. Players are allowed to make wagers on any variety of bets.

Craps is a very fun and social game, because players often are betting on the same thing, and often win or lose together.

The first decision a player has to make is to bet for or against the player rolling the dice.

After that has been determined, the “come out” roll occurs, and the game begins.

The rules are then based on the outcome of the come out roll:

All bets are paid and the round ends if the person rolling the dice rolls 2, 3, 7, 11 or 12. A 7 or 11 is a win, a 2 3 or 12 is a loss.

If any other number is hit, a “point number” is determined and play continues. The two most popular are the pass bet and don’t pass bet. The pass bet is placed on the Pass Line before the come out. If the round goes past the come out, the bet is that the point number will be rolled again before a 7 comes out. (This is also called betting right, or with the dice roller).

How you win this bet: A 7 or 11 on the come out, or matching the point before a 7 hits if it makes it past the first roll. How you lose this bet: Come out loss on 2, 3 or 12 or if a 7 hits before the point on rolls after the come out.

The opposite is the don’t pass bet. A wager is placed on the don’t pass line. If you go past the come out roll, you are now betting the dice roller will hit a 7 before making the point. So you are betting against the person rolling the dice. You win this bet if: The come out roll shows craps – 2, 3, or 12 and any subsequent roll if it is a 7.

You lose if: The come out is 7 or 11, and any subsequent roll hits the point before a 7 is rolled.

Come/Don't Come bets: These bets are the same as the pass and don’t pass bets, except they are played while a round occurring.

Odds bets

The odds bet: This is a saver bet placed when there is already pass/come or don’t pass/don’t come bet in play. An Odds bet is a backup bet on a Pass/Don't Pass/Come/Don't Come bet already on the table.

There are also place bets and proposition bets available. Most prop bets, however, are longterm losers, and players should avoid them unless the are just looking for constant action. These bets can bring wild swings however and occasionally dramatic losses in addition to the money wagered on the pass and come bets.
